Captain Bob McPhail

Dear Members.

Firstly, I congratulate George, Susan and Christie on their success in the Club Championship. A great achievement for all three of you. As I move into the second half of my year as Captain, I can now reflect on the first six months ‘in the job’!

The golf course was unplayable until early March with snow and ice covering the course during that time, but the frozen ground enabled heavy earth moving equipment to come on to the course without damaging the fairways and large mounds of ‘spoil’, created by the excavation of the rerouted burn at the 9th 10th and 14th, was used to fill in the old burn. the Brave decision to sow seed on the bare soil of the altered areas   of the 9th and 10th at the end of last season proved to be correct as the new grass took firm hold  before the worst of the winter weather arrived Although enjoying a sunny and dry June, the course was in danger of being burned due to lack of rainfall.  However, heavy and much needed rain has fallen during the past  never been in better condition in all the 53 years I have been a member.

I know that the members will appreciate the hard work and effort put in by Gerry and his team in getting the course into its current condition. The Captain’s life is certainly a busy one and the first six months have flown by.  Social functions, golfing events both within and outside Williamwood, and of course the many meetings all make for a very involved life.  Thank goodness I’m retired! At Williamwood we are fortunate that a plan to reorganise the layout of the course to bring it up to modern day standards was instigated by PCs Stuart Christie and Alex Morrison in 2006.   The alterations to the layout have largelybeen completed and paid for, and while minor adjustments will still have to be made it is hoped that for the next few years the members can enjoy the golf course without any major works being carried out.

Another highlight was, of  between George Crawford who was competing in his thirteenth final and Colin Gailey who won the championship ‘way back in 1983. The match was played in the finest traditions of sportsmanship between two old friends who had nothing but respect for each other. I  hope that you have a good summer and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the golf course and in the clubhouse.

Club Championship

Sunday 20th June saw the conclusion of the Club Championships and the conditions were very favourable with many members turning out to support the finalists.  In the Gents Club Championship Final, George Crawford played Colin Gailey. The morning round finished all square with the players recording a better ball gross score of 59 and with some holes halved in birdie. In the afternoon round George Crawford moved ahead and finally won the match 3 & 2. The match was played in an excellent spirit and both players deserve credit for the way they played throughout the day. In the Ladies final Susan Ramsay won The Ladies Club Championship beating Carol McNally  at the 16th hole.  This match was well supported by the ladies and we were treated to a very high standard of golf by both ladies. The Junior Club Championship Final was between Fraser Davren and Christie Gray.  Congratulations to all finalists and in particular to this years winners.

Yours sincerely

Bob McPhail
